Employee Spotlight: Raj Sandhu
With over 280 locations across Canada, FYidoctors employees are some of the most dedicated and passionate vision care professionals working in the industry. Meet the people who make us who we are.
1. What’s your current role at FYidoctors?
I'm an Optometric Assistant. My job consists of pre-testing patients before they see the doctor, fitting and dispensing glasses for our patients and completing the day-to-day duties needed to keep our amazing office running smoothly and efficiently.
2. What made you want to work in eye care?
I wanted a job in healthcare, and eye care was just one branch that I thought looked interesting. I’m glad I pursued it – it’s a really fulfilling career path.
3. What do you love most about your job?
My co-workers. They are my work family and they make every day fun and entertaining. I feel lucky to have landed at this location.
4. What’s one of the most challenging parts of your job?
Working in an industry where you deal with patients all of the time can be challenging, as you have to provide the best possible service to all of the patients you deal with in a limited amount of time. It’s tough being amazing.
5. What’s one of your favourite moments from working at the clinic?
Learning how to use the OCT when we first got it in the office. Optical Coherence Tomography (or OCT) is a scanning system that produces detailed images of the retina. It’s kind of like getting an MRI or x-ray for your eye. Scans can detect early signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, detached retinas and other eye disorders. It only takes a few minutes to do a scan and the equipment never touches the eye, so there’s really no discomfort. Practicing on each other was a lot of fun.
6. What’s the most important thing people should know about their eye health?
Get your eyes checked often. It's not just about a change in your prescription, but the overall health of your eye as well. Don't wait until you have pinkeye or for something to go wrong before you get an eye exam.
7. Where do you see the future of eye care going?
I see the future of eye care going towards a more technological and automated route, with the development of instruments that can detect diseases and conditions before they're even present.
8. What’s your favourite pair of frames in the store right now?
Pretty much every frame I try on. It’s an occupational hazard, we love trying on new frames as they arrive in the store and end up wanting several pair of glasses.
9. What’s your favourite eye-friendly snack?
Eggs. Beyond being incredibly versatile, they help to fight macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness.
10. Where would we find you when you’re not at FYidoctors?
Volunteering. Giving back is very important to me.
