Clinic Spotlight: McLeod Optometry Clinic
FYidoctors welcomes the staff and office of McLeod Optometry Clinic in Ottawa, Ontario, as one of our newest partners! We sat down with optometrist Dr. Thomas Noël to get to know a little more about the clinic, which has been serving patients for more than six decades.
1. How long has your clinic been serving the community in Ottawa?
Our office is located in beautiful downtown Ottawa in a quaint 1920s home, which has been converted into a spacious medical clinic. With hardwood floors, large windows, and a fireplace, our office is an accessible, home-like environment.
2. What is unique about your clinic?
The clinic opened 60 years ago as a husband-and-wife practice dedicated to providing complete eye care. It was founded in 1950 by Dr. R.W. Patterson, a graduate of the University of Toronto. Originally located at 180 Metcalfe Street, Dr. Patterson ran the practice alongside his wife. Because of a growing number of patients, Dr. Patterson relocated the office to its current home, a larger facility on 323 McLeod Street, in 1967. Dr. Patterson retired in 1986, and his son, Dr. W.A. Patterson, took over the practice.
3. Tell us about who works there.
The practice continued to grow, with Dr. Thomas Noël joining the practice in 2005 and taking over the management of the clinic. Recently, the clinic underwent a massive renovation and expanded the dispensary, the on-site laboratory and contact lens department. To further accommodate patients’ needs, a fourth exam room was added in 2014.
“Although the clinic has expanded over the years, our team still considers each other family, and want you to feel that you are a part of our family as well,” said Dr. Noël.
Dr. Noël is interested in laser vision correction, ocular surface disease (dry eyes), and glaucoma care. He also enjoys working in contact lenses and multifocal contact lenses. The clinic is a general optometry practice and Dr. Noël sees children, adults, and seniors. He holds a doctorate in optometry from the University of Montreal School of Optometry and a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Noël has published articles in Ottawa Life Magazine, Healthzone, and the National Post.
4. What was the most memorable or rewarding moment of your practice?
In May 2014, Dr. Noël had the opportunity to give a lecture on Parliament Hill on the importance of eye exams for children during Vision Health Month. He also presented at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s 40th and 41st Annual Pediatric Refresher Course “Examining Eyes: The Pediatric Eye Exam,” which was organized by the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine Continuing Education in 2015 and in 2016.
5. How is the clinic a part of the community?
Dr. Noël has been a board member of the Parent-Teacher Association at Ste-Geneviève Catholic School since 2016 and is a past board member of the Oasis Child Care Centre located on the Ottawa General Hospital campus 2012. The office staff and the doctors have participated in several community events such as Hope Volleyball, Ride for Dads for prostate cancer, and fundraisers for the Breast Cancer Society.
6. Where can we find you outside of office hours?
When not relaxing at the cottage with family and friends, Dr. Noël can be found fishing, tennis, wake surfing, or water skiing. In the winter, downhill skiing is a favourite.
7. How do your patients receive exceptional care?
“I enjoy getting to know my patients and finding ways to better improve their vision and enjoyment of life,” said Dr. Noël. “We will work together to find the right treatment plan to protect your vision.”
