I am an associate optometrist practicing in Parry Sound, Ontario.
Briefly describe your educational background and training locations.
I received my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical toxicology at the University of Guelph and then completed my optometry degree at the University of Waterloo.
In addition, I was trained in ocular diseases and therapeutics at OMNI Eye Specialists, in Baltimore Maryland, as well as pediatrics, binocular vision and contact lens care at the Waterloo Vision Care Clinic.
What makes your clinic a unique place to work?
Our clinic is unique because we’re in a relatively remote community, but we have state-of-the-art technology, allowing us to manage a variety of eye conditions. And of course, it’s unique because we’re in beautiful Parry Sound.
What made you want to work in eye care?
When I was 10 years old, I got my first pair of glasses and they completely changed my life. I want to do the same for others. Our eyes are so important and affect all aspects of our lives.
What do you love most about your job?
Meeting so many wonderful people in my new community. I love helping people improve their quality of life by improving their vision.
What’s one of the most challenging parts of your job?
I've been warned my greatest challenge will be my winter commute.
What’s one of your favourite moments from working at the clinic?
When I worked as an intern at FYidoctors last summer, I was greeted with open arms by the staff and community, and instantly made to feel welcome. Now I have the privilege to get that feeling every day.
Where do you see the future of eye care going?
I see more emphasis on eye care in the future. By 2050 an estimated 60% of North Americans will be near-sighted. This is a huge increase in the number of people who will require glasses, contacts or refractive surgery to correct their vision. Eye care is going to be even more in-demand in the future and I am excited to be apart of it.
What is the most important advice you want to give your patients?
Don’t overlook your eyes! A regular eye exam is the best way to see clearly today, tomorrow and for years to come.
What’s your personal eyewear style?
I usually wear contact lenses during the day, and at night, I like wearing glasses with light-weight frames and classic colours.
Where would we find you when you’re not at FYidoctors?
Exploring in and around Georgian Bay, enjoying the outdoors. Lately, I’ve been having fun discovering some new trails in the area.
Anything else to add?
Fun fact about me: I spent three great years in product development making bacon and other processed meats before I became an optometrist. If you want to talk bacon, I’m your girl!
