What’s your current role at FYidoctors?
Optometrist at the Whistler Clinic.
Briefly describe your educational background and training locations.
I completed a Residency at the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in primary care and contact lenses. My optometry degree was from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. I also trained at the Houston Eye Associates Ophthalmology Clinic.
What makes your clinic a unique place to work?
Our patients come from diverse backgrounds from around the world and love adventure. They have interesting stories and unique vision requirements as most of our patient participate in a wide range of sports.
What made you want to work in eye care?
When I was a kid I had eye exams at the School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo and the students would do my eye exams. I also wear glasses and contact lenses myself from a young age.
What do you love most about your job?
Getting to talk with people from all over the world who have unique stories, and at the same time enjoying being able to correct their vision and improve their quality of life.
What’s one of the most challenging parts of your job?
Most of our patients are fun and adventurous and have interesting stories to tell, so I wish I had more time to just sit and chat with them.
What’s one of your favourite moments from working at the clinic?
I was able to help a lovely elderly women who suffered from blurry vision and chronic eye pain for years due to severely dry eyes. She is now able to live comfortably without eye pain, has regained her vision and can even still drive.
Where do you see the future of eye care going?
Telemedicine, detecting disease earlier through eye exams like diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
What is the most important advice you want to give your patients?
Protect your vision. Wear sunglasses, eat healthy, exercise, get regular eye exams and don’t ignore changes in your vision—if you notice any changes be sure to come in for an appointment right away.
What's your personal eyewear style?
Fun, colourful frames – especially pink!
Where would we find you when you’re not at FYidoctors?
Mostly spending time outdoors with my husband, children and dog. Biking, skiing, hiking, canoeing, paddle boarding and playing in the Whistler Women’s Hockey League.
