Employee Spotlight: Dr. Jody Killoran

Posted on June 9th, 2021

Dr. Jody Killoran is ready to see you at Family Vision, which recently became partners of FYidoctors!

Graduating from the University of Waterloo in 2002, she spent her career enriching Nova Scotia communities as an optometrist and partner at Family Vision.

Read more about her journey below.

What first sparked your interest in optometry?

I was always planning on pursuing something in healthcare and when I was in my second year of university, I started volunteering. I ended up doing some work with my optometrist and it seemed like a great profession. It got me really interested and it seemed like a great balance between work and personal life as opposed to some of the other healthcare fields. The rest is history!

What was your career like before joining FYidoctors?

I graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2002, and I have been part of Family Vision Clinic ever since. This was the first place I started practicing and I have stayed here the entire time. I started out as an associate first and then started as a partner in 2005. Since then, we have grown the offices. It was just three of us at the beginning and now there are eight partners and five locations.

How did you make the decision to partner with FYidoctors?

We’ve done very well growing from a small practice to multiple doctors and multiple locations. I think we’re at that point where joining a larger group like FYidoctors is going to take our practices to the next level. With FYidoctors being run by optometrists, we still get a stay in what we’re doing, and we are still invested in the company. We are going to be able to grow our clinics and engage with clients on a bigger scale - we wouldn’t be able to do that on our own.

How will this partnership impact your local community and your patients?

Once the integration happens and everyone has settled back in, I think it will impact us by having that larger footprint here and more brand recognition. Eventually, it would be nice if as patients drive by and when they see us, they can say, “I know that brand, that’s where I’m going to go.”

FYidoctors really focuses on patient care and improving vision and lifestyle. Having that associated with our clinics is really going to help push things forward.

When you look to the future what growth do you hope to see?

Joining FYidoctors there’s going to be more brand recognition. Their level of service regarding patients and their marketing team will allow us to move the company in a positive direction that would have been very challenging to do on our own. Also, having the support of 300 clinics across Canada and other optometrists will help us network and bounce ideas back and forth.

Becoming a part of a large group like FYidoctors also reduces the admin work. Joining FYidoctors is the perfect solution. I can keep seeing my patients which I love to do and when it comes time that I want to cut back, it’s easier for an optometrist to join without having to deal with the admin work.
