OD Spotlight: Dr. Nikko Brar

Posted on August 4th, 2021

Situated in northeast Calgary, FYidoctors London Town Square is proud to serve one of the most family-friendly, bustling and close-knit communities in the city. The passionate clinic team concentrates on providing a safe and inclusive environment for their patients while also focusing on their vision health.

One of the doctors who makes this clinic a special place to visit is Dr. Nikko Brar. Having been at the London Town location for over 10 years, she values the rapport she’s been able to form with families through the years, allowing her to provide a personal element to their vision care.

Read more of her story below.

1. What is your current role at FYidoctors?

I am a co-lead OD, but I interpret this role as being an ambassador for FYidoctors. I feel a responsibility to be a champion of the company's core values and foster a team environment where we all feel united in what we want for our patients. This leadership position puts me at the forefront of many important decisions happening at the clinic level, yet collaboration with the team is always my priority.

2. Briefly describe your educational background and training locations.

I did my Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Manitoba. I then went on to work in an optical lab before enrolling in the Doctorate of Optometry program at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. During that time, I had multiple exciting internship and externship training opportunities, including the Aran Eye Institute in Miami and the Tianjin Eye Hospital in Tianjin, China.

3. What makes your clinic a unique place to work?

London Town Square offers a truly exceptional experience, not only for my patients but for the team too. Being the only FYidoctors in northeast Calgary, we have the privilege to be positioned to service a community that strongly reflects our values as a company. It’s extremely rewarding to provide a safe and inclusive environment where our patients can feel welcomed and treated with respect; we appreciate that some of our team members speak languages common in the area and use those skills to build on that feeling of kinship and understanding.
Northeast Calgary encompasses a community that wants nothing more than to work hard and live a happy, safe and healthy life with their loved ones. We are in a unique position to enhance their lives when it comes to their eye care needs.

4. What made you want to work in eye care?

My interest in this field grew when I was a young adult and had my first eye exam! I had no previous exposure or knowledge of what an optometrist does. I was intrigued by how much clearer my vision was once I got my glasses—I had no idea what I was missing! I was then lucky enough to shadow my optometrist for several weeks, gaining a huge level of respect for what optometrists do and the profession as a whole.

5. What do you love most about your job?

I love coming to work every day knowing that whatever comes my way, I have the tools necessary to provide top-notch patient care and make a difference in people’s lives. Every case is different; there’s no cookie-cutter approach to any field of health care. There’s nothing mundane or repetitive about forming a specific and unique management plan for each patient. I always say that my job is not just giving eye exams, it's meeting people in my community and forming relationships.

 6. What excites you about the future of eye care?

Scope expansion! There are advanced procedure courses for optometrists coming down the pipeline. They include training for lid disease treatments and laser procedures for treating the anterior segment of the eye. My other evolving areas of interest are myopia control and glaucoma management.

7. What is some important advice you always give to your patients?

“Wear your prescription!” It’s so simple, but I frequently encounter patients who believe that wearing glasses will make their eyes weaker. This stigma is very much alive in our society, and we still have a lot of work to do to educate the public about the importance of lenses and routine eye exams. I love knowing that I’m making a difference in the community when those teaching moments arise.

8. What’s your personal eyewear style?

I’m always interested in anything unique and new on the market. I never want to get into a piece of eyewear that’s similar to what I’ve had before. I love to play around with different shapes and colours. I’m lucky to have the assistance of my team at the clinic, always guiding me in a direction I might not have gone on my own.

9. Where would we find you when you’re not at FYidoctors?

Staying active with my two young daughters. Parks, bike rides, or a day trip to the mountains are usually our norm. Quality time with family and friends is always a priority.
