Novelty contact lenses are a fun way to take a costume to the next level or change up your look. Unfortunately, there are also risks associated with wearing them. Here are five things you should know before you purchase any novelty contact lenses.
1. Get a prescription from your eye doctor first
Even if you don’t have any vision problems and are just wearing your novelty contact lenses for a single occasion (such as Halloween or a costume party), you should still visit your optometrist beforehand to get a prescription for the lenses and ensure they fit properly. If not, you could risk injuring your eyes.
2. Buy lenses from a licensed and reputable retailer
Novelty contact lenses are currently regulated in Canada, so make sure you purchase yours from a licensed dealer with the proper credentials. Never buy contact lenses from an unlicensed source that doesn't require a prescription, as you could run the risk of permanently damaging your eyes.
3. Follow your optometrist’s instructions
Always follow your vision care professional’s instructions for wearing and cleaning your contact lenses. If you don’t, you run the risk of getting an eye infection and even permanently damaging your vision.
4. Never share contact lenses
While lending your novelty contact lenses to friends and family may seem like a fun idea, sharing lenses can spread harmful bacteria and possibly even lead to blindness.
5. Visit your optometrist if you experience any discomfort
If you experience any swelling, redness of the eyes or pain during or after wearing your novelty contact lenses, contact your doctor of optometry immediately as it may be the sign of an infection or another serious eye condition.
