Outdoor Adventures for the Fall and Winter Seasons

With colder temperatures approaching (or depending where you live, already arriving), it’s easy to rationalize staying indoors and hiding out until spring. But it is important to still spend time outdoors, not just for the sake of saying you left the house, but for your overall health—including your eyesight and for the prevention of conditions, such as myopia.

Wait, what is myopia?

Myopia, a common vision condition also known as nearsightedness, is due to individuals having elongated eyes that cause light to fall short of the retina. People suffering from myopia can see close objects clearly, but struggle to see objects in the distance. This condition has become much more prevalent with the rise of advanced technology, which is especially relevant to young generations. A recent study shows that the epidemic of myopia could be related to the amount of screen-time and extended periods of reading that young people are engaging in.

But, alternatively, a Canadian study also shows that spending time outside can help in the prevention of myopia, especially in young people.

Outdoor autumn activities

  1. Go for a walk or a hike and admire the natural beauty of this season. Download a hiking app like AllTrails to discover different trails—from easy to difficult—in your local area.
  2. Attend your local zoo. Most zoos are open year-round, and some even host additional events, such as light displays, to increase interest during the colder months.
  3. Get out and take photos of the picturesque scenery in your community. Check out Instagram and search the hashtag for your area to find different subjects and photo-ops!
  4. Take the family to an outdoor playground.
  5. Visit small towns in your area. You never know which town might have a quirky museum or a great main street with shops and restaurants to explore.
  6. Set up an outdoor scavenger hunt or try geocaching.
  7. Attend an outdoor market. Check out Facebook events to find markets in your community.
  8. Collect litter from your local parks and trails.

Outdoor winter activities

  1. Go sledding. Just remember to wear goggles or other eye protection!
  2. Shovel snow for your neighbours. There may even be organizations looking for volunteers to shovel now for elderly folks—do a search in your local areas!
  3. Build a snowman. Have a contest among your family members or friends to see who can build the tallest or most creative one.
  4. Try a wintertime sport like snowshoeing, skiing, or snowboarding.
  5. Get your family together for a game of pond hockey.

Keep these activities in mind when deciding what fun activities you want to do on the weekend throughout the colder seasons. Spending more time outside is beneficial to your vision, as well as your overall health!
