Eye Diseases & Conditions

Every year, millions of people around the world suffer from eye health problems that can result in a loss of vision and even blindness. Unfortunately, many common eye diseases and eye conditions don't display any symptoms until later stages, at which point it may be too late. That's why it's important to get regular eye exams so that any eye diseases or eye conditions can be detected early on and treatment be made available.

Diabetic Retinopathy

If you currently have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you may be at risk of diabetic retinopathy, which is a common eye disease and one of the leading causes of blindness among North American adults.

The disease is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina (the part of your eye that transmits visual information to your brain). In some cases blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In other cases, abnormal new blood vessels may actually grow on the surface of your retina.

If you suffer from diabetes, you may have diabetic retinopathy and not even know it. That's because the symptoms often go undetected at first, but over time gradually become worse, eventually resulting in vision loss and even blindness in one or both eyes.

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for diabetic retinopathy, but the good news is that if it's caught in the early stages, the disease can be treated and its symptoms slowed down and managed. That's why if you have diabetes you should schedule an eye exam with your FYidoctors optometrist at least once a year.
