Eye Diseases & Conditions

Every year, millions of people around the world suffer from eye health problems that can result in a loss of vision and even blindness. Unfortunately, many common eye diseases and eye conditions don't display any symptoms until later stages, at which point it may be too late. That's why it's important to get regular eye exams so that any eye diseases or eye conditions can be detected early on and treatment be made available.

You may not have heard of keratoconus before, but according to the Canadian Keratoconus Foundation, roughly 1 in 1000 people are likely to suffer from this degenerative eye disease, with teenagers often at the most risk.

Keratoconus is a slowly occurring progressive eye disease in which the normally round cornea (the clear outer part of the eye) thins and begins to bulge into a cone which then bends the light as it enters the eye, resulting in blurred vision. While the exact cause of the disease remains unknown, many doctors suspect that it’s likely due to a combination of genetics and environmental conditions.

Early detection is key in minimizing the more severe symptoms of the disease, which is why it's important that you and your children get your eyes examined on a regular basis.
