Employee Spotlight: Ben Inglis

Say hello to Dr. Benjamin Inglis, our newest optometrist on Vancouver Island. When he’s not treating patients and finding solutions for those with visual impairments, he’s soaking up the sights of Canada’s beautiful west coast. Read our interview with Dr. Inglis below for insight on his career journey and what he loves about being an optometrist.

What’s your current role at FYidoctors?

I am an Optometrist working in the Duncan and Mill Bay clinics on Vancouver Island.

Briefly describe your educational background and training locations.

I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in biology at the University of Regina.  I graduated from the University of Waterloo with distinction as a Doctor of Optometry in 2016. During my clinical externships I worked at the Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas, Texas. It was there that I gained a stronger appreciation for the impacts of visual impairment and the importance of offering Low Vision resources and tools to patients that could benefit from them.

What makes your clinic a unique place to work?

Our Duncan and Mill Bay clinic locations are central in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, only minutes from both the ocean and mountains—perfect for a lunch hour or after work adventure.

What made you want to work in eye care?

In high school I visited my optometrist for an eye exam and found it to be a very interesting and rewarding profession. Growing up I had a strong interest in science and technology, but knew I wanted a career where I would be working alongside other people too, so Optometry was a perfect fit.

What do you love most about your job?

I love having a direct and sometimes profoundly positive impact on someone’s quality of life by offering a solution to meet their vision and eye health needs. Every day is unique and somewhat unpredictable. I meet individuals from so many different walks of life; I love hearing their stories and learning something new.

What’s one of the most challenging parts of your job?

I often find the ergonomics of the job and keeping a good posture throughout the day to be most challenging, so if you see me slouching make sure to let me know!

Where do you see the future of eye care going?

I foresee there being a greater utilization of tele-medicine and virtual or video exams for routine eye care. Artificial Intelligence and technological advancements will continue to improve the sensitivity and specificity of disease diagnosis and the efficacy of treatments.

What is the most important advice you want to give your patients?

Try to be proactive instead of reactive with respect to your eyes – ensure you have routine eye examinations once every 1-2years but never hesitate to visit us sooner if you are concerned about anything eye or vision related.

What's your personal eyewear style?

I don’t require any vision correction yet, but I like to wear polarized sunglasses if I’m spending time outdoors. I also like to collect unique and vintage frames.

Where would we find you when you’re not at FYidoctors?

When I’m not in clinic I can be found outside enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. I enjoy working in my garden and flower beds, as well as regularly going for long bike rides and runs.
