FYidoctors Whistler is located in the popular resort town just outside of Vancouver. We’ve caught up with Cara Yuill, a Practice Coach at this location!
What’s your current role at FYidoctors?
I’m the Practice Coach at the clinic in beautiful Whistler, BC. When asked what I do, my short answer is “whatever they need me to do!” The long answer is that I help facilitate all areas of the clinic, from ongoing coaching on products, tools and eye health information with our team and patients to assisting every area including scheduling appointments, anything to do with glasses, and contact lens trainings.
Briefly describe your educational background and training locations:
After starting in the industry in 2005, I earned a Canadian Optometric Assistant designation in 2006. With over 15 years of experience behind me, I still enjoy learning about new diagnostic and vision technology.
What makes your clinic a unique place to work?
The people, and the view of the mountains doesn’t hurt either! From our amazing, personable team to our patients, there is a community feel when you come through the door. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, we’d like to make you feel comfortable and get to know you.
What made you want to work in eye care?
My mom worked for an optometrist in the early 70’s. I remember finding her vintage frame collection growing up and thinking they were so cool! I also needed vision correction at an early age, and because of that, I know the effect good vision has on childhood learning and development. Once I was in the field myself, it was such a great way to merge my creativity and love of fashion with function and life changing visual aids.
What do you love most about your job?
There’s so much diversity in what I get to do everyday. Not everyone’s experience or adaptation to the challenges of their vision will be the same. Ensuring they know I am here to help and will be available to guide them through everything from what to look for in a frame, what to expect with their new glasses or how their vision may progress over time means a great deal to me.
What’s one of your favourite moments from working at the clinic?
I love when patients pick up or comment on our team’s enthusiasm and passion for vision and eyewear. When someone leaves with their new glasses and says how much they love them, I know we were able to make a meaningful connection that will impact their everyday life.
Where do you see the future of eye care going?
I think diagnostic technologies are going to be able to detect eye disease earlier and earlier, hopefully preventing some of the problems causing vision loss throughout our lives.
What is the most important advice you want to give your patients?
To trust your eye care provider. We have a wealth of knowledge and experience to help guide you in every aspect of your vision from eye health and prescriptions to frames and lenses. We are here to help.
What's your personal eyewear style?
Anything cat eye and bold. I’ve worn glasses most of my life and look for pieces that stand out, but also flatter my face shape. People often say they could never pull off a bold frame, and I say it’s all in the attitude. Dare to wear something fabulous!
Where would we find you when you’re not at FYidoctors?
My husband and I made the move from Whistler to Pemberton in 2017. When not at work, I can be found helping my husband with our 20 beehives, floating on one of the beautiful lakes with my pup, or letting my creative side flourish through making art.
