How long have you been an optician?
I've been in the optical industry since 1970 and was fully licensed as an optician in 1973, so I've been involved in the eye care industry for quite a while and have seen a lot of changes over the years.
What is it that made you want to work in eyewear?
To be honest, at the time I was just looking for a job. But the more I learned while working in the industry, the more I realized that it was something I loved. I haven't looked back since. It's been an amazing career.
For those who don't know, what does an optician do?
A lot of people confuse an optometrist and an optician, but they're actually two very different roles. Essentially, a dispensing optician is a trained and licensed eye care technician, but we can't test your vision, write eye prescriptions or diagnose and treat eye diseases—that's where optometrists come in. An optician has a great deal of training and knowledge that we use to recommend frames and lenses, take eye and facial measurements, build your eyewear and adjust and repair lenses and frames.
What do you love most about your job?
I love being able to improve the way someone looks from both sides of their lenses. It's incredibly rewarding to help someone see their very best and find the perfect frames and lenses to match their personality and style.
What’s one of the most challenging parts of your job?
One of the most challenging parts of my job is often convincing a patient to change their look. People tend to be pretty set in their ways when it comes to their glasses, but sometimes just giving them that extra nudge can help them find eyewear that really matches who they are and can be a real self confidence booster.
What’s one of your favourite moments from the clinic?
I think it's hard to pick out just one favourite moment from working here at FYidoctors - Sarnia. I really love the daily pleasure of working with a team that we’ve been able to build in a relatively short period of time.
What services are available at FYidoctors – Sarnia?
Because no two patients have the same eyes, we really pride ourselves on being a boutique culture that services the individual needs of each patient at each encounter. It's a very hands-on and personalized approach that means we can help each patient find the right eyewear to meet their specific needs.
What’s the most important thing people should know about their eyewear?
Quality is key. If you don't get a quality product it really is going to have a huge impact on the way you look and how your eyewear performs. That's why we stand behind every product we dispense here at the clinic.
Where do you see the future of eyewear going?
Eyewear has come a long way since I started out in the industry. It used to be the glasses were considered something that you just wore to see better. They were a piece of equipment, not something that was personal to you. Now, glasses are a fashion item and a way for people to make a statement and really express their personality and style. I think eyewear pieces are – and will continue to be – something that accents people's daily fashion choices. We're going to see more innovative materials, more interesting designs and more designer frames that are really unique.
