4 Surprising Ways to Improve the Health of Your Eyes

Our vision is one of your most important gifts, which is why taking care of our eyes is essential. The best way to do this is through regular eye exams. In the meantime, here are four surprising ways that you can promote healthy eyes:

1. Wash your hands
The eyes are highly susceptible to infection because the moist environment of the eye’s surface is an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive in. You can help your eyes fend off infectious bacteria by keeping your hands clean and washing up before touching your face. Working with clean hands while you put on makeup or apply contact lenses will dramatically reduce bacterial exposure to your eyes.

2. Wear sunglasses year-round
A good pair of sunglasses is more than just a fashion statement—sunglasses do for your eyes what sunscreen does for the skin. Wear your UV protected sunglasses all season every time you go outside so that harmful UV rays don't cause premature aging of the eyes, cataracts, or other issues.

3. Give Your Eyes a Break
Many of us spend a lot of time staring at a computer screen, TV or smartphone. Unfortunately, this can put a great deal of strain on your vision, leading to headaches and eye fatigue. The best way to ensure your eyes function properly is to use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes take a 20 second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.

4. Drink more water
Hydration is an important part of general health, including your eyes. The eyes need to make tears in order to cleanse themselves, and they will not be able to do so if you are not drinking enough water. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day and refill it often so you get the hydration you need.
