Seeing the world through a child’s eyes is an expression typically used to describe an untainted perspective. Eleven-year-old Skylar did not realize she wasn’t experiencing her surroundings as crystal clear as she could have been. The benefit of pediatric eye exams is spoken in volumes by Skylar and her mom, who have had first-hand experience of the far-reaching effect that children face with their compromised vision, from recreation to academia. Taking the necessary steps to prevent and subsequently treat poor eyesight in youth can make a world of difference to any family, alleviating the challenges that potentially result from impaired sight.
Healthy Vision, Brilliant Outlook
Until her check-up at FYidoctors’ Windsor—Roundhouse clinic, Skylar was not fully able to benefit from the confidence that healthy eyesight potentially allows; confidence many of us may take for granted. After getting a thorough eye exam, Skylar was given a new outlook on life. With her stylish new eye-catching green glasses, Skylar was given the opportunity to reach her full potential and soon began to realize the beauty around her. Revelling in the never-before-seen vibrancy of nature, Skylar was captivated by leaves, the detail on tree bark and the splendidly unique intricacy of snowflakes falling from the sky.
Confidence in the Classroom & Beyond
Beyond appreciating her environment, she quickly excelled in both school and sports. As she finally had the self-confidence and ability to read—even in her spare time enjoying a Harry Potter novel—and write without blurred vision, Skylar was able to participate in the classroom and complete her homework assignments; even math got easier. With just as much determination on the ice, Skylar enthusiastically skated and handled a puck around the hockey rink with her natural skill assisted by newly improved sight.
Skylar’s mom discusses not recognizing the atypical signs of her daughter’s poor eyesight, noting that they weren’t the usual indicators of what parents are told to look for. Once Skylar’s vision problems were addressed, her mom was overcome with joy and relief as she recounts the effect on her daughter, saying “her life is now changed because she has glasses”.

Regular Childhood Eye Examinations
Be sure to book a comprehensive eye exam for your child at least once a year to ensure their eyes are healthy. Also, remember to visit your optometrist if you suspect there may be a problem with your child’s vision; even if symptoms are not typical. As was the case with Skylar, eyesight can affect many areas of life and manifest in a variety of ways; routine eye exams play an important role in you and your loved one’s health and well-being.
