What are progressive lenses?
Progressives unlike reading glasses are great if you need more than one vision correction. If you struggle to read a menu and see your dinner guest, then wearing progressive lens lets you do both without switching between different pairs of glasses. You get 3 distance corrections in one multitasking lens: reading at the bottom, intermediate in the middle and distance at the top.

Are progressive lenses and bifocals the same?
The short answer is no! Multifocal lenses have come a long way since the bifocal. Progressives correct for 3 different distances: reading, intermediate and distance. Bifocals only correct for distance and reading. You’ll also notice that bifocals have a line across the lens to divide reading and distance regions. With progressives, there are no lines across your lenses; in fact, no one would be able to tell you were wearing them just by looking at you. The changes between different distance corrections are much smoother in a progressive lens and more abrupt in bifocals.
Which is better, bifocal or progressive lenses?
Bifocals correct both distance and reading vision, with a visible line separating the two corrections. Progressives, on the other hand, offer three corrections for near, intermediate, and distance vision, providing the best field of vision across all distances without a visible line. Many prefer Progressives for this reason, but ultimately, it comes down to personal choice.
How do I know if I need progressive lenses?
If you find it difficult seeing up close and far away -- like reading the fine print on a bottle and seeing street signs – then it’s best to schedule an eye exam. Typically, when we reach our 40s, our eyes gradually lose the ability to focus on nearby objects or text. This is known as presbyopia and it’s very normal and a progressive prescription will help address it.
Is it difficult to adapt to progressives, are there downsides of progressives?
It’s common to take some time to adapt to progressives. And it’s mainly because you’re no longer looking anywhere through a single vision lens; instead, you train your eyes to look at different parts of the lens for certain tasks. Our optometrists and opticians will guide you through the process. We typically recommend wearing them as much as possible until you adjust. On average, it takes 2 weeks of continuous wear to adjust.

Yes. The right progressive lens with the right prescription reduces strain on eye muscles and provides the ability to focus and clearly see objects at varying distances.

Are there progressive contact lenses?
Yes! You can purchase multifocal contact lenses from brands like Johnson & Johnson (Acuvue), Bausch + Lomb, Clariti and Cooper Vision. However, you do require a valid contact lens prescription. If you don’t have one, you can book a contact lens fitting today.
