What is Macumira?
MacuMira is Canada’s first and only clinically proven treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration, now offered at Spectrum Optometry, Partners of FYidoctors.
For more information on this treatment, contact our clinic.
What is MacuMira?
MacuMira is Canada’s first clinically proven, Health Canada-approved treatment for dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Dry AMD is a gradual deterioration of the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision used for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. MacuMira offers a safe, non-invasive way to help restore vision loss caused by dry AMD, improve visual function, and support long-term eye health.
How does MacuMira work?
MacuMira uses gentle, painless microcurrent therapy applied over closed eyelids to stimulate retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells in the eye. This helps generate more cellular energy, improve blood flow, and support the health of the macula. While MacuMira is not a cure for AMD, it can help improve visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and slow the progression of dry AMD for many patients.
What can I expect during treatment?
MacuMira treatment is comfortable, non-invasive, and involves no injections or medication. Your treatment begins with four sessions over 10 days, with each appointment lasting approximately 45 minutes. During the session, you will relax comfortably in an exam chair while a specialized headset gently delivers microcurrent stimulation to your closed eyes. Most patients find the process simple, painless, and easy to complete.
Who is a good candidate for MacuMira?
MacuMira is often best suited for patients in the early to intermediate stages of dry AMD who are experiencing mild to moderate vision loss and want to preserve their remaining sight. It may also help slow disease progression and improve quality of life for patients struggling with daily tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Patients with electronic implants such as pacemakers or cochlear implants are not candidates for treatment, so a consultation with our team is the best first step to determine if MacuMira is right for you.
